Locally Germinated: a farmer’s cooperative, uses an innovative food business model called Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, to bring fresh, ecologically-grown food to the Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent area. Consumers buy a share in our CSA and receive a weekly basket of produce featuring the freshest seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs. Our members are directly supporting their farmers and our families.

In 2011, we had to contend with the wettest Spring, Summer, and Fall on record, with long delays in planting, with pests, and with crop failures. Despite all that, we were still able to fill our members baskets to overflowing with 28 different food crops throughout the season. This year, we are growing over 40 different crops!

Here are some examples of the fresh, local produce you can expect in your baskets throughout the 2012 season:

  • In late June, baskets will have Lettuce, Snow Peas, Snap Peas, Radishes, Spinach, and Kale.
  • In August, we’ll have Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Basil, Beans, Carrots, Eggplant, Cucumbers, Onions, Melons, and more.
  • In September, there will be Broccoli, Cauliflower, Watermelon, Summer+Winter Squash, and Cabbages.
  • In October you’ll see Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts, and Leeks.

Our 2012 share options are:

Large Share (feeds 3-4 people) : $25/week for 20 weeks = $500 total share price

Small Share (feeds 1-2 people) : $15/week for 20 weeks = $300 total share price

In addition to or instead of the Lg or Sm Share we are offering:

Leafy Green Share : $10/wk for 20 weeks = $200 *note this share will have approximately 2 bunches of leafy greens like Kale or Chard and a half pound of mixed salad greens per week

Tomato Canning Share : 50 pounds of tomatoes in total = $100 total share price *available in mid to late August

Winter Storage Share: $100 total for a variety of storage crops such as squash, potatoes, sunchokes, onions, turnips, beets, carrots, cabbage and garlic *available late October

Shares can be paid either in Full or in 3 installments. A $250 deposit, or half of the total share cost, is required at sign-up before the April 8th deadline. $125, or a quarter of the total share cost, will be due with the first weekly basket on June 15th (give or take a week depending on the weather), and the final payment will be due on August 8th /10th.

A deposit is required in April so that we can properly plan for the season and purchase the seeds, baskets, compost, row cover and other equipment we need to start planting. Our first crop, peas, go in the ground in mid-April, and heat-loving crops such as tomatoes and peppers need to be germinated indoors by April.

Space is limited and will be on first come, first serve basis.

Baskets will be delivered to Windsor on Saturdays at the Downtown Windsor Farmer’s Market for those who live in the city and require delivery. Others may choose to pickup on Wednesdays at the farm in Cottam. We are still working out details for delivery to the Chatham-Kent area.
